Ironside

Species: Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta)
Age: Adult
Gender: Adult
Arrival: May 25, 2018
Weight:  138.6 lbs / 63.0 kg
Found: Fancy Bluff Creek (Brunswick, GA)
Rescued by: Mark Dodd, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR)

When found:

Ironside was observed floating in Fancy Bluff Creek near Brunswick, GA for a few days before stranding in the mud.  He was rescued by GADNR & transferred to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center with common symptoms of debilitation.  A heavy amount of epibiota was removed from his shell including algae, barnacles, and a non-native species of crabs.  Blood work indicated anemia, low protein, glucose and calcium.  In addition to this lethargic & weakened condition, Ironsides exhibits two old (healed) carapace fractures from a boat propeller strike.  Based on tail length, Ironsides is an adult male.

Treatment & Current Status:  Ironside was started on broad spectrum antibiotics, calcium injections and given IV fluids for dehydration as supportive care.  Intravenous nutrition called Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) was administered for a few weeks to ensure adequate nutrition before reintroducing a natural seafood diet.

**Ironside was named for his resiliency in surviving boat strike injuries without rehabilitation.  He was found near a region in which wood was harvested & milled to build the USS Constitution, known as “Old Ironsides.”  Be sure to look for his long tail!**
