Shrimp & Grits Festival and Tree Lighting
We were all heartbroken when Hurricane Irma caused the cancellation of our 12th annual Shrimp & Grits Festival. The festival is the island’s biggest event and takes more than a year to plan, so simply moving it to another date was not an option. But, no one felt that should keep our community down. Instead, we’re having a special, one-time-only festival that merges some of the most-beloved elements from Shrimp & Grits and the Tree Lighting celebration into a new, two-day event, Merry Shrimpmas.
Merry Shrimpmas will feature the region’s favorite restaurants selling their classic shrimp and grits dishes, live music, artists’ market for holiday shopping, and regional food trucks. Younger festivalgoers can take in story time with Santa Claus, mail their letters to the North Pole, and play in the kids’ zone. Festivities will culminate Saturday evening with the highly anticipated lighting of the great Jekyll Island Christmas Tree, along with snow and fireworks.
This celebration will provide an opportunity for everyone to support local businesses in the aftermath of the storm, and will offer the community a unique way to ring in the holiday season.
